The title pretty much says it all. What is a good sensor for detecting if somebody is sitting on a desk office that has a mesh instead of a cushion?

TLDR: Use a cushion and a pressure sensor 🙂

I think I'll put a strain gauge on either the piston or the mesh itself and read it using an esp32.

I use a seat pressure sensor and a ZigBee flood sensor, modified to get the input from the pressure sensor, cutting and soldering the wires. No polarity. Works with AAA rechargeable batteries and lasts for many many months 🤷‍♂️

And I use the cushion because of the long working hours in that chair...

Through mesh? Perhaps another option is a heat sensor, or a thermal IR sensor (remote thermometer).
