I'm looking to make my office fan smart-smart (and possibly extend to other areas of the house, if this works out). Right now I just have a smart switch for the fan power (which includes the lights), but I'd like to figure out a way to have it so that I can control the lights and fan smartly. Right now, if I put smart bulbs into the fan, whenever I tell my smart house to turn off my office lights, the bulbs would start pitching a fit (as I've had happen in my kitchen, where I actually have smart bulbs plugged into a little butcher block overhead rack, which shares power with the overall kitchen lights, which are controlled by a single smart switch). Any input would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

check your fan's instructions/wiring - some do support wiring the lights and fan motor to separate circuits (which would probably mean running a second wire up to the fan). other than that you'd probably be looking at installing something smart in the fan itself to control the fan motor separately from the lights, and then leave the fan permanently powered (setting the smart switch to "smart bulb" or "decoupled" mode if available so you can use it as a remote control).
My father put the fixture up a number of years ago, and he's one of those "a light is a light is a light" types. If you've seen one, you've seen them all. Tossed the instruction booklet after he got everything wired up and squared away. From what he recalls, it's an everything-on-one simple binary switch. Everything either on, or off.
