Proper way to handle events with Z2M MQTT

I recently moved from Zigbee integration to Z2MQTT. I used to use the built in device type actions to setup automations for buttons and such. But since moving to Z2M i configured all my automations on MQTT message \ topic trigger instead. Is this the better or correct way to do this?
