#Assist ask question

I'm trying to use assist ask yes/no question function in home assistant using voice PE edition and Home Assistant installed on raspberry pi5.
I'm able to get assist to ask question. Once it finish asking question, it's stuck on waiting mode and the light on VPE goes off.
Tried the following:

  • Different HA version 2025.7 to 2025.8 has the same issue
  • When trying to re-run the automation, I get no response and the trace show that the VPE is busy
  • When I restart HA, I can run it once and it get stuck again after asking the question
    Only way I get to continue the conversation is by saying the wake word prior to answer the question.

Is there something to do to reply without saying the wake word?

then it is unable to get firmware updates so has an old firmware which does not have the support for the functionality.
you can either reenable access for the VPE or you can manually install a firmware update.

to manually install you should plug the VPE into your PC and use THIS tool following the instructions HERE
this will allow you to reflash the device with the latest firmware and reconnect it to your network.
