Hello to anyone reading this i wanted to ask about the home assistant hdmi cec integration i recently learned that it allows tvs to control devices connected via hdmi with one remote so this brings us to the topic does the addon and integration allow you to connect devices to you home assistant machine say if i run ha in a vm i can passthrough an usb hdmi adapter that has cec and control any devices i connect to it? i am asking all this because i am thinking about getting a av receiver not for my tv mostly for speakers around my room and i was planning on just connecting it straight to my pc and playing music with music assistant via squeezelite so now that i know this i want to know is there any benefit in getting and hdmi cec usb adapter and connecting the av receiver to home assistant

# wary fulcrum Hello to anyone reading this i wanted to ask about the home assistant hdmi cec i...

ok so if i understand what your trying to do (and i am not sure i do... perhaps you can diagram it?) then the answer is most likely a "maybe" its a pretty cool but involved idea. only way to be sure would be to try it. (and I am not sure how reliable it would be even if it did work)

there are likely better ways. like getting a network enabled audio distributor. or maybe something with an IR remote and setting up an IR blaster to send commands

well the av receiver that i want to get has ethernet

#

Onkyo TX-RZ50

#

thats the one i am going to get

#

maybe i can control the receiver via network with home assistant and then use hdmi cec to control devices connected to it

#

like my tv

perhaps, would have to check out what options the device has. i think some do allow for sending cec commands from their network interface/ui but not all.

#

some serious money for those kind of things

yea ill check thanks worst case scanario i connect everything to ha and do it with automations

#

not sure if i can get an ir remote and map buttons to automation in home assistant

#

i mean just a plain ir remote that is not connected to anything and have buttons for the tv the av and others

since i don't use the tv tuner, just a chromecast connected to my av receiver, i have no real use for controlling the tv. it wakes up when there is a signal from the receiver, and the speakers are muted permanently.

my receiver at least allows input selection, volume and play/pause functionality through the onkyo integration. the receiver must have "network standby" enabled.

i don't really use ha to control anything on the receiver either. i have a chromecast plugged in as the default source. when the chromecast goes idle for 2 minutes i cast a ha status view to it.
