I do have some IKEA Tretakt Plugs that work fine as zigbee router.
In the IKEA environment, you can pair those plugs with their switches, for example the rodret switch which is also zigbee compatible.
It seems that i cannot pair a Rodret Switch with a given Tretakt plug, without loosing the connection with the HA zigbee network. When I reconnect the plug to the HA zigbee network, the previously paired Rodret switch does not work anymore.
Anyone knows how I can use the Rodret switch with a plug and at the same time keep the plug in the zigbee network as router?
I also have issues switching the plug on and off when it is connected to the HA zigbee network. Anyone has similar experiences?

when you use the proximity pairing feature to pair an ikea remote directly to a device to control it, that removes both devices from your zigbee network and sets up a new private direct zigbee connection between the two devices.
if you have both devices connected to home assistant, there's two things you can do.
first, and easiest, is to set up a home assistant automation which is triggered by button presses on the remote, and turns the plug on and off
the second, which is a bit tricker to do, is to set up zigbee "binding" from the zigbee coordinator (home assistant) side to tell the remote to send commands directly to the plug while still being on the same zigbee network as everything else.
hmm, i guess setting up bindings isn't as tricky as it used to be. something to be aware of is that ikea devices with current firmware generally only support "device" binding, not "group" binding.
I wouldn’t bother with a local binding if you have HA and a Zigbee network attached to it. Just create a simple automation to control the plug. You then can do all the usual clever HA things: logging, inserting your own events, etc.
doing it with an automation also means you can keep controlling things in the same way even if you replace the plug or remote at some point with a different type of hardware.
Timers (as in stay on for X mins, say), logging, linking it to other automations, no limits really. Vs using a remote button and that’s all that’s gonna control it.
But made the point to death now eh.
Thanks. Did a normal automation now. Deas easy.
But it was good to learn that pairing directly, removes the device from the HA network. Now I understand why I lost control over another plug. And I assumed up to now it was a problem of distance to the next router...
Unsure. I had a brief look at pairing a dimmer to a bulb (both TRADFRI) and got it working but then concluded it was of no utility as I couldn’t then automate it. It’s got a few limited use cases, like a cupboard light tied to a motion sensor. But that’s about it.
Yes, I have a lot of Ikea smart plugs and remotes, all into HA. I use the remotes to switch on or off other devices or start other automations. They are very useful, if attached to HA
the reason ikea devices support this direct pairing is because it allows them to sell the switches and lights or plugs as kits without a hub, where they can be used with the switch directly controlling the light or plug.
the kits are actually sold pre-paired, so you can use it right out of the box
Sure. Marketing driven I guess. Totally useless if you know half a thing about the broader picture though.
if you're just looking for a plug or a bulb that you can control from across the room with a remote - not a smart home system - it's honestly a pretty good option. and it has the benefit that if you decide to get a hub and do smart home stuff later, you can continue to use the same plug and remote.
