Hi everyone. I would like to put a temperature sensor inside my fridge and my freezer to know when the lid remain open and avoid wasting food. My fridge is dumb and does not alert me when I don't close it so I would like to get a notification/trigger when the temperature go above some threshold compared to the "normal" one.

Do you have any reccomendation relative to that? The sensor must work at "low" temperature and should be battery powered. I know that probably this is not the best scenario for a "normal" temperature sensor (the battery won't last as much as in the room) but still, better than nothing 😄

Note: I own a hue bridge and an Apple TV 4K, I don't know if they can work as 3rd party hub but I would like to avoid to also purchase an additional hub for the temperature sensor if possible.

Hi, if you have a ZigBee hub, you can use a door sensor, one for the refrigerator and one for the freezer. Then you can make an automation that alerts you if one of them are open for 5 minutes, for example. Then you can avoid the battery problem due to low temperature 🙂

Get a temperature sensor with a probe that you can feed into the fridge, rather than putting the whole sensor in the fridge

The sensors rarely work well in the fridge because of the low temperature and metal casing which blocks signals

My cheap tuya zigbee temperature sensor works fine so far. The main issue seems to be to get a signal out as often as I like.

I don't think I have any zigbee hub, I only own a Hue bridge and an Apple TV 4k.

I don't know if maybe it could make sense to go for the aqara solution given that I was also thinking to use their presence sensor to manage lights

given your experiences with HA and all the vendors, which one would you think it makes sense to "invest" in that offer great support to HA (and HomeKit) and have a good variatey of sensors/products for the home automation?

the apollo automation temp-1 seems to be the ultimate temp sensor for ha. for use with a fridge get either the short or long external probe. there are both usb and battery powered versions. you can also get a food safe high temp probe for cooking/grilling.

I use a TP-Link Tapo Smart Temperature and Humidity Sensor T310 with TAPO IoT Hub 100. It works well for me inside the refrigerator and freezer down to at least -2dF (the freezer with the refrigerator). I have used them for about 3 months with no problem. It does not work for our stand-alone freezer as the signal gets blocked. I have purchased a probe unit for that, but have not installed it yet. You would need to test one in the fridges and freezers you want to put them to make certain the signal can get through in before committing.

unfortunatelly I'm not based on US so it's not an option to me, shipping+import taxes would make it too expensive on my side

i agree. i bought my mmwave sensor from them before the tariff madness. now it is not only a lot more expensive, but also unpredictable. especially with the long shipping time on the base shipping. who knows what tariffs are in effect when the goods arrive?

Sorry if I worded it rudely. They’re usually $2-$10 and called door or window open sensors
