#Samsung SSD + HomeAssistant?

I've been trying to port an existing microSD instance of HomeAssistant to an M.2 SSD. I'm hoping I didn't choose an incompatible format/drive/etc. I asked an AI, and sent photos (see attached), and was given the following information: "Your Samsung SSD 980 is technically NVMe and compatible in theory, but it's a known problem drive on the Raspberry Pi 5—community tests consistently show it fails to initialize or appear due to power and PCIe link issues specific to its controller. Your Waveshare adapter and Pi 5 are working fine, as the PCIe device is detected, but HAOS doesn't see the SSD because it's failing at the hardware negotiation level. The solution is to either switch to a known-good SSD like the 970 Evo Plus, WD SN570, or Crucial P3, or use the 980 via a USB-to-NVMe adapter instead." So.. did I back myself into a corner with the 980, or what?

Thinking I might go with one of these, then, maybe?

You can probably get a whole Mini PC with 16GB of memory and 250GB of storage (which IMO is better than any pi) for 140 bucks 👀
500GB is likely more than enough.

sinful meteor
#

More than enough for... what, exactly?

soft dew
#

You tell me. The minimum recommendation for HAOS is 32GB. If you abuse it as a NAS or compile lots of ESPHome firmware or install lots of addons you might need more.

Right now, all I'm using it for is local-hosting some lights, some water valves, some wireless cameras (I plan on migrating off of these once I can find some alternative units I like), and some user logic. I'm not saying I'm not looking to 'go nuts' with things, but I'm almost shouting into the wind as it is..

soft dew

Yeah so 500GB is likely enough 🙂

sinful meteor
#

And I can always upgrade later, yeah?

#

Backup, flash fresh copy to new drive, load backup?

Raspberry pi also makes their own SSDs by the way. I assume they will be compatible and perhaps cheaper.

#

Sure. I don't see why not.

I'd start with the smallest one but like I said, I only assume compatibility. I don't own a pi myself because of reasons in my link.

#

Which NVMe HAT/adapter do you use?

sinful meteor
#

I'm finding, more and more, apparently, that all of the "OMG YES COMPATIBLE EVERYTHING WORKS BUY THIS" I've heard since starting this local-smart-home thing.. is "BUY THIS IT WORKS BECAUSE MY SPONSORS SAY IT DOES"

#

😐

#

Or "It used to work, but was updated, and now it no longer works, sorry."

soft dew

Not sure who recommended the 980 to you but always best to check multiple sources.
What you linked looks compatible to me from a supported length standpoint as the pi SSD is 2230 rather than the "standard" 2280.
The 970 Plus is a good SSD too, I just don't want you spending more than needed.

ChatGPT and other "AI" systems do a fantastic job of generating well structured, convincing looking answers... that are either totally garbage or, if you're lucky, have subtle flaws. Don't use them to "help" others, and don't use them yourself.

soft dew
#

^ In case it was an AI 😄

sinful meteor
#

How do I know you're not an AI? Or am I an AI? 🤣 😇

#

... no, but, seriously, my head's on fire, and I'm going nuts. I see people with all kinds of amazing smart home systems, and I'm sitting here in my tin-roof Lincoln log cabin in the middle of Y'alldunwannalivehere in the US. 😐

soft dew

You don't have to get fancy. You wouldn't believe how boring my HA install is. I use it more like a dashboard.

sinful meteor
#

It's not an "I don't want to get fancy," it's "I want to let my smart home gremlin pull a Julie Andrews in Sound of Music, but money and circumstances are holding me back."

Read: My house was not built for smart.

#

My parents grew up in a world where everything in the home had to be done by hand—turning off lights, adjusting thermostats, checking if the garage was closed, locking the doors before bed. Those tasks were just part of daily life. I, on the other hand, can automate all of that. My home knows when I leave, dims lights at sunset, turns off appliances when no one’s around, and alerts me if something’s off—all without me lifting a finger (or, at least, that's the idea). So when I talk about smart home stuff, they sometimes think I’m overcomplicating things, but from my perspective, I’m just removing friction they’ve always accepted as normal. Unfortunately, the house leans more in favor of them than it does me.

#

The smartest thing in my house right now is the ESP32 BLE proxy I'm running.

#

And it's hit or miss because the tech I and my folks use is so locked down for.. surprise.. privacy reasons.

#

To some overcoming such hurdles in smart ways is part of the fun.

sinful meteor
#

So, what should I do to get my HA instance off of the Pi, and onto a more stable SSD?

#

Or should I bother, at this point?

soft dew
#

You can buy the pi SSD and that HAT. Flash HAOS and then restore a backup.

#

If you're happy with what you have you can leave as is for now. SD Cards are just slow and tend to corrupt easily.

sinful meteor
#

Is the Pi SSD and HAT available on Amazon?

soft dew
#

Best you check yourself. I'm likely not even in the same timezone 😄

sinful meteor
#

Found this. Apparently it's compatible with my existing HAT.

soft dew
#

Way too expensive.

#

Like I said, you can buy a whole Mini PC for that money.

sinful meteor
#

I'm trying to use as much of the stuff that I originally bought, so that I can mitigate as much of the "I screwed up buying this" as possible.

#

A lot of the stuff I bought is outside of the return window.

soft dew
#

What I'm saying is get a drive < 50 bucks or it makes no financial sense.

sinful meteor
#

Unfortunately, everything I can find is either > $50, or sold out, or garbly-garble-keyboard-smash off-brand.

dont go Pi, use minipc. Way much better!

golden otter
#

What mini pc and other hardware components are a must have to start off? The pi has a built in Bluetooth network device, that detected my ThermosPro devices instant.
My main purpose is energy management, in combination with temperature. I will need a p1 meter. I found slimmelezer+, home wizard p1, slimme meter smartgateways, or what p1 meter is “the best”.
I sent back my pi and looking into a Beelink N100 at the moment. @soft dew @wise venture

Beelink is good option, go for 8+gb ram

golden otter
# vernal barn why did you send the pi back?

Two corrupt sd cards in two weeks. So didn’t work at all. Could have upgraded it with a ssd and hat, but that would have been just as expensive as a mini pc. And because of the issues I didn’t trust the pi anymore. Just want a solid, working solution.

So because of cheap, unreliable sdcards, you replace a good little machine? Man. I hope you don't ever need to get tires on your car, you might wind up replacing the whole car.

golden otter
#

If I buy a new car with tires on them to drive to my work each day, and the tires break in the first week, I’m unable to get to my work. Then the supplier sents my a new set of wheels, but they also die on me in week two. Then yes, i sent back the car because I don’t trust it bringing me to work, without a hassle for the future.
I then consider an electric bike the community advices me to get, to get to work safe and without problems.
This doesn’t necessarily mean the car was crap, but me as a consumer don’t trust it bringing me to work. I might have been unlucky, or the car wasn’t the perfect match with the tires they supplied.
I hope you sleep well @trim vine , it seems you need it.
