#New to HA, ZOOZ Z-Wave dongle is giving me a headache

Hello friends!

I have recently rebuilt my network, and I'm diving head first into Home Assistant...and I've hit my first roadblock that I can't resolve by searching the internet and this discord...

A little context, I ordered and received my Sonoff dongle for Zigbee, and a ZOOZ 800 for Z-wave. The Sonoff was recognized without a hitch... but the Z-wave setup has been a nightmare.

A lot of previous posts reference correct pathing... which I have verified trying both the by-id and the recommended settings in the doc. both have the same end result.

The device is seen by HA, and I can see the info under "All Hardware" It's attached to "ttyAMC0" -- it defines itself in the config selection for the Z-Wave add-on. When I try to start the Z-Wave add-on, I am crushed with this.

"Failed to initialize the driver: ZWaveError: Timeout while waiting for an ACK
from the controller (ZW0200)"
(Full photo attached for the rest)

The integration will just hang on "Starting Add-On" despite recognizing that the device is there. It actually sees both the dongles when starting the Integration...

I am only trying to run the Z-Wave JS, not the UI version.

After an hour and a half of going in circles, I followed the guide to update the firmware with with the Simplicity Studio tool, and it saw it in the Z-Wave tool... and it took the firmware.

Here's some more info just in case.

Running HA on a VM through UTM on an M1 mac mini. "Shared USB" option is turned on, and the devices are selectable from within the VM.

I would appreciate any help in getting this figured out, Y'all have been an awesome resource for me to get this far!

I can't help with that but your problem sounds a lot like the VM pass-through isn't working

Even though the zigbee one works? ☹️
