#What is the best way to run HASS on a pi5?
1 messages ยท Page 1 of 1 (latest)
dont use a rpi at all ๐ but that is not the question so...
how is your cooling fan connected? via gpio?
i dont think "HASSbian" has been a thing for about 6 years now.
you could use a container install on RPI-OS if you wanted...
however haos is the best way to run home assistant and we should look at getting your setup working.
what actual setup do you have? how is the fan connected? how could you normally configure it on other setups?
I have one of these https://raspberrypi.dk/en/product/raspberry-pi-active-cooler/. I think it uses GPIO and is enabled by defailt on other distributions. I just need to edit the config.txt file and cannot get any method to work. I don't have a minihdmi adapter.
it seems that if you cant get direct access to the os terminal then you will likely have to enable os level ssh on port 22222 which will allow you to edit the config file on the underlaying os.
to be honest i am super supprised that it doesnt default to on instead of off. that seems like it would be the better failure option
I even bought a second one because I thought the first was faulty ๐
so I need to use this? https://community.home-assistant.io/t/add-on-hassos-ssh-port-22222-configurator/264109
HassOS SSH port 22222 Configurator Put your SSH Key in the addon configuration, then start. The addon will enable Port 22222 ssh. About This project is a part of my HassOS Configurator project. The goal of this add-on, similar to root apps on Android, is to make a mole-hill out of a mountain. Installation Within Home Assistant, click Sup...
yeah thats the thing, i havent done it in ages but i am sure you can find instructions on doing it.
once you have access to the underlaying os you can edit the config file it seems
i am wondering if you can just disconnect the pwm cable from the fan. maybe it would just run at full speed if there is no signal
so if you wanted to do it in hardware i think you could just disconnect the blue wire from the connector and the fan will run
i dont have the hardware to try it though
Hi, I had a similar issue in the RPi4 and now it's working. It's not a simple step but can be done. I'll look for the instructions I followed and I'll put them here later ๐
now I'm trying to edit the SD card but that has it's own set of issues too ๐
FYI: running HA on a sd card long term is not recommended.
but what do you mean by "edit the sd card" ?
edit the config file from windows
but that of course can't be easy
installing sketchy software now
this is definitely a terrible idea
I just can't find a good idea, everything is jumping through 20 hoops
should probably just order a hdmi cable....
do you care about the speed of the fan or just that it runs?
apparently they are loud, so I would prefer that it is controlled
you could try it i guess and see what its like
I tried setting up ssh but it just gives more issues
you can remove the crimp from the JST connector
if your gunna be messing with a rpi then having a hdmi adaptor for it will probably be handy at some point anyway so getting one is not the end of the world
I know that this needs extra steps, but I strongly recommend to use a SSD, not a SD card.
Totally agree
Although the fan being controlled, the RPi heats a lot, and mine is almost always on, or maybe I have a low threshold temperature. I also recommend to have the RPi not in a 'living' area, that's not near where you or your family are often
strongly suggest looking for a sff pc, costeffective, low power and enough recourses for HAOS
ran rpi several years, would not recomment that.. ๐
too bad I already have it
then at least get an ssd hat and ssd for it
or even a usb ssd to be fair
flash it and boot from it
that be about it. once you can see what your doing you can plug a keyboard in and use the "login" command to get to the OS root shell
just dont expect too much its very basic. haos is "just enough os to run home assistant"
should bee easy enough to edit a file though
only editor is vi i think
