#Should I be able to add a gas appliance/device to the Energy Dashboard?

I have a Navian NPE-240 hot water heater, with a cumulative gas use sensor measured in m:

sensor.ch1_unit1_cumulative_gas_use:

state_class: total_increasing
unit_of_measurement: m³
device_class: gas
friendly_name: CH1_UNIT1 Cumulative Gas Use

However it won't let me add it as a device to the Energy Dashboard (does not appear in list). I tried creating a template sensor using kcal (m³ * 8837), but it also won't let me add it to dashboard. According to https://www.home-assistant.io/docs/energy/faq/#troubleshooting-missing-entities, the sensor should meat all the criteria for being able to add it. What am I doing wrong here?

The funny thing is it will let me add it as as Gas Source, but not a Device.

Home Energy Management is a vast topic and not everything might be clear. This page tries to clarify a couple of things.

Any issue to solve for this sensor in devtools -> statistics?

Individual devices are not intended for gas, only energy

I know there are feature requests to add equivalent of individual devices for gas and water, but we don't have it now.
