does the tp link smart home integration have to be online after setup to work? or is it local after authentication to say the ep25 kasa plug.

In the case of tplink, it's local

Oof

you could check by blocking those devices' access to the WAN

i think some of them are supposed to work locally after set up (some devices you need to enable in the app for local) but also the device can randomly decide "i want to authenticate with the mothership today" and then stops until it can do that

#

yeah i am sure you can get them working fine but eventually but they are getting more and more awkward and maybe just stop working at some point. also means if they discontinue and you ever have to reset it up your fucked.

i have a ton of kasa devices, i haven't firewalled them off or anything, but so far they've just worked. definitely looks like any controls are local (ie, HA tells a plug to turn off, that's on the LAN, not going to the internet and back down)

yup, some of them still work locally and absolutly fine. however some are now coming set up in such a way where they will randomly go. "i know i am local but first you need to log in to tplink server. then ill start working for a while again" and unless your firewalling them off theres nothing stopping tplink pushing an update to make them all do that.

they tested a small roll out a while back. where some older kasa plugs were "upgraded" to tapo plugs and all you have to do to get the plugs with upgraded features is to "log into the tapo app with your tapo account". they have shown what they want to do and cant be trusted to not do it.

its not a panic, rip them all out situation. but i would recommend not getting any more and if you have to replace then move away from them.

reminds me of something they did just before i got into the smart home stuff, apparently they pushed out a change that locked out third party integrations and there was a massive pushback, so they backed off. i guess that was in 21/22. but it sounds like they're trying to find other ways to sneak in

#

i've been going with the third reality zigbee plugs lately for new purchases, they have power monitoring for much cheaper than the kasa plugs

yup, exactly. they are trying to slow walk it. hence non-urgent migration recommended. and dont get any more 🙂
