I have a spare Netgear c3700 router and it does have a usb port in the back, I was wondering, could I flash some type of firmware on it so I can run home assistant on it? I also have a lutron hub, but I am unsure if I can run home assistant on that by configuring it. I know you can buy a raspberry pi and run home assistant, but I want to make use of things that I already have and do something DIY.

No
also as you mentioned it, I don't recommend a RPI either, I have some notes on the subject of hardware selection HERE
Is RPI short for raspberry pi?
yes
Why do you not recommend it?
i cover that in the notes that i linked above. but the short version is that by the time you get everything you need for it to actually be a good setup then you might as well get a mini pc
I don't think I would want to use a mini pc because , it uses much more power than a raspberry pi, it takes up more space.
I want to setup home assistant for my house, but I want it to be cost effective lol, my dad doesn't think we need it, but I want to say otherwise
and the cost is one of the important things deterring him away
by the time you buy a
rpi
case
psu
ssd-hat
ssd
then you can get a mini pc that is better
something like the s12 pro is not that much bigger than a rpi and its power consumption
if you want something super low power then you are better off getting a green
would something like this work for a mini pc? or more powerful? https://www.ebay.com/itm/177211487110?_skw=mini+pc&itmmeta=01JZ0SPRHZW9RW47FR2DPMRGQA&hash=item2942a0b386:g:i~4AAeSwq-1nw02P&itmprp=enc%3AAQAKAAAA4FkggFvd1GGDu0w3yXCmi1cBhiG9XXZsPDP%2FXas4mqIJgSQVxrm6FHh6aAsFB4bTNzrn5XiPKZc13EMqK0CPkf%2BFiVHznwxUpQLnk2iuwv0hpKgpRZBuNImQ%2B7H%2BrUkAd4Dqf9hlvz32%2FnHQ6345DEU6iAvqV%2BBEQW1eSBjk4%2FO0JptPsCGOvynITxXNAubkajjMfmWK%2BNGEmqYbFfDV4e2hyo5ncOQ9G13%2FWbd1AE0dmZt8BZ3wi1PtayHGV9uDfUYieJlRqeqIV5878uOuU6wFICp63h4VBOA5Fv%2FzFG3I|tkp%3ABk9SR8CJ25n4ZQ
yeah you should be able to get haos working on that well enough
probably has a higher power consumption than a modern n100 system though
what is like the important parts for determining if haos will run good, and what does it mean to run good? like no lagging on the webpage?
it really depends on the use case. but responsiveness will be a part of it
would a mini pc or raspberry pi use more power than a lutron hub since thats what I am currently using to control some lights. I am assuming it does.
what do you mean by use case? like simple automations like turning lights i/o and blinds and stuff?
i dont know anything about the hardware of the lutron. but its possible that it will but its also not going to be by a lot
yeah, these are pretty basic things
honestly, if power consumption is a big factor for you then the Green is probably going to one of the best options
big starting price though
I am still thinking about the things I can automate in my house
the green is great value tbh
you will always find new stuff. its always an ongoing effort
First thing I want to automate is lights, which is like beginner level, but I can't find anything else really
If I had more use cases for it, I would definetly get it for the house
also what is zigbee, and is it important if you are starting a smart home?
zigbee is a type of wireless network. i dont have a zigbee network currently. its only important if you intend on using zigbee devices
Wait so in my case, would I still need to keep the lutron hub installed and running or can I operate my lights through home assistant without the hub
i dont have any first hand experience but after a quick search it looks like that is indeed the case
What is the case? I can operate the lights without the hub? And does home assistant also work with google assistant?
Sorry if I am annoying you with these questions, I just want to make sure before i go down the route of smart home
