#RiPi 4 or 5 8GB for HAOS?

I've never had a use for the two Raspberry Pi's I've acquired over the years, until recently. Now I see a million things, but the most important is a way to manage the various smart devices I have.

I also want to be able to install and run a few different services in Docker containers: Open Project, Jellyfin (maybe eventually) and a few others.

Should I put the RiPi 4 as the HAOS? I has ESPHome, but I can use my PC to write the firmware to them. Then I can leave the Pi 5 free for other tasks.

If Supervised was still an option I'd have them both on the Pi 5.

Personally I would use the RPi 5 for HA OS (with SSD!!!) and config the RPi4 for the other stuff. Although both the 4 and 5 are not great at decoding for Jellyfin.

I would have recommended you virtualize HAOS and run other random apps and containers in another VM or CT. If you want to dedicate one to HAOS I'd pick the "lesser" one so you have the better one to play around with.

In theory yes but might not be much fun.

Heh I'll avoid that then

What you're describing is for when I get one of those new Ryzen AI mini PC's with 10GBe.

#

but that hardware purchase isn't now, I'll focus on the 4 and 5 for now.

given those options i would run haos on the pi 4, and run all the "mission critical" services there. everything else on the pi 5. that way you minimize the impact non mission critical containers can have on your ha system.

i run haos directly on a pi 4 4gb myself with ssd. i don't want to virtualize it as i want it to keep running 24/7 as it has done for years now.

and do not run from sd card. a good memory stick is way better. ssd even better.

and you're right, the Pi5 is better for the random stuff I want to do, and I won't feel bad if it all crashes down breaking settings.|

But I want the home stuff stable

looked it up, and I have the NVME to USB 3.2 board right here I can use too

#

Nice not having to buy stuff again!

i use a cheap usb to sata cable and a standard sata ssd

Just make sure to use a powered USB HUB. Pis are infamous for poor USB power and file system corruption.

i have been running my pi 4 ssd directly from on board usb port for many years

Some have luck but search powered usb in this discord server. The suggestions don't come from nowhere.

Mostly it's injecting 5V to the USB line right?

#

AKA like the docks that have PD in and PC out

I have PD trigger boards

#

and yes, on my 5 I've noticed I have to have USB C to BOTH the Pi and the SSD hat otherwise it reboots sometimes

The cables were no good too, like more for ipad charging

#

but I switched to a 240W cable on a 150W USBC charger and it doesn't seem to be having issues

i have the original power adapter. the usb to sata cable is from aliexpress

#

i wouldn't try to power spinning rust over the internal port though. my ha pi has a zigbee stick and the ssd connected

this is what I need right?? /s

Searching my local market for a split cable. Think I'll need to DIY it

#

Found it!

oh! I'm going to use an M.2 adapter board

So I do need either power, or to make sure the pi can suply enough power

#

tempted to get another one of these

don't some of those boards have power in that then drives the pi?
