Newbie here… I’m attempting to move my homekit home into HA for futher control, but still use a Homekit interface for the wife and kids.

I set up HA in a virtual Machine on a laptop. I also have 3 hubs i need to bring in. Hubitat C8 (hoping i can use this for all zwave and zigbee control), Aqara M3, and the Switchbot 2 hubs. Is this possible? Am I wasting my time?

Hey, I would search for each hub individually to see if they can be connected. Haven't used any of the ones you mention. Does HA autodetect any of the ones you mention using zero-config?

Also, I wouldn't use the virtual machine setup. I used that in the beginning but it is a lot more hassel.

What’s better? Turning the laptop into a dedicated HA?

Exactly, that's what I did. I took and old PC and installed HA directly as OS instead of having a VM in-between.

Yeah, but installing Home Assistant OS (HAOS) in a Proxmox (KVM) is also supported. You get more flexibility to do whatever you want with your hardware at the price of more complexity. So, if you are a beginner, start with HAOS on bare metal. Which software are you using for virtualization?
