Hiya. I'm hoping someone can de-rabbit hole me.

I have some new matter/thread blinds coming (eve motionblinds) and need a thread border router or similar for it.
I currently run Home Assistant as a container on Unraid, and should either be able to pass through a usb device or could have something on the internet.

I don't have any mainstream smart hubs with matter to use (google home, etc), so would be going for a USB stick or hub to add to the network.

I don't have any other zigbee/zwave devices that I need connected at the moment, although I do have hue switches and the hue hub. It would be nice if I could add zigbee devices in the future as well

What should I be looking for?
I see a lot of talk about the ZBDongle and it's various variants as well as SMLIGHT which also seems to have atleast 6 different variants. I cant for the life of me figure out which ones will support thread/matter, as some pages list that only some can, and other pages list that they should.

I'm not fussed about price but fast UK delivery would be good

You will need Home Assistant OS and a Thread radio such as the Home Assistant ZBT-1 or Sonoff-E dongle

#

Then your HA instance will automaticlaly become a Thread Border router

One comment: SMLight promotes their "Matter over Ethernet" feature but the HA devs don't recommend it as Thread is super time sensitive. You need to use Thread over USB to get any type of support.

Ah, i was about to select the SLZB-MR1
in that case, I should go with whichever SLZB-07 I can find in stock?
and then do something else when I want zigbee, second stick?

And you still need Home Assistant OS with the matter addon and OTBR addon

#

That device is not a standalone border router

You can also get the 06M or MR1/MR2/MR3 I believe and use them in USB mode. I use a 06 for my zigbee and 06M as USB Thread

#

Not sure if the MR1, MR2 or MR3 can do Thread over USB and Zigbee over Ethernet

#

Reach out to SMLight, they're pretty fast to reply

#

GL.Inet also has standalone TBRs

#

But I've never used them
