Hello, I am new here and new to HA in general. I figure I should start with a control panel before I try to branch into a bunch of stuff beyond that. I am looking for some recommendations for a smart device/tablet that is currently on the market that I can modify without too much trouble to meet these needs. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Peppernip!
#Recommendations for a tablet/smart device to turn into a smart control panel.

any android tablet (well at least not one that's super old) and run fully kiosk on it.
this gets you up and running fairly quickly with a dashboard on a tablet.
How old is super old? Android 8?
I was thinking about a lenovo CD-18781Y
Seeing as theres a community built behind them
I see you cant do much with google home nest hub besides directly cast a dashboard to it. Im looking to do a website vs a dashboard cast
i picked up a 2nd hand Lenovo Tab M8 HD (TB-8505F) which i use as a kitchen dashboard
fully kiosk will run on android 8 i beleive but you may not get all features
personally i would go for a "known brand" even if its 2nd hand instead of one of the no name really cheap ones
you dont quite known what they may have embedded into the android imagine on them and not always flashable
also if your new to this sort of stuff then i recommend you set something up thats a little bit temporary and actually use it for a bit before putting brackets on the wall etc...
actually use it for a bit, see how it "feels" before you bolt it into the wall etc... its easier to make changes that way
also stuff like the lenovos has "battery protection mode" enabled which not all cheaper stuff will. it allows android to keep the battery at 40-60% so you dont have a fully charged bomb on the wall of unknown origin
So is there any hope with the lenovo thinksmart or should I look elsewhere for a main home display?
Im new to Home Automation, I have an extensive background in electronics/computer support/network engineering
I have dabbled in home automation with google home but never have tried to do a full set up with home assistant before
So is creating your own dashboard and casting it to a google nest hub more time efficient/effort efficient than trying to focus around the core display
I have a camera display page that I want it to flip to every couple seconds then switch back to the panel view and keep going in this pattern. Or leaving it in the camera display page mode til I triple tap or some action like that
@wanton skiff It looks like those are unavailable unfortunately
i havent done it but i know alot of people ahve problems casting stuff to them. running your own display that accesses the webui is generally a better option
Any 10” newish android tablet will work. Definitely don’t use an iPad or Amazon tablet.
Fully kiosk browser provides battery information, so I’m yiu can automate the charging so the battery doesn’t go bad and puff up because it’s always plugged
yeah, i was gunna do something like this then realised tablet i used had "battery protection mode" so didnt need it
Oh
some do some do, but this one saved me a smart plug 🙂
I placed mine by the door, my gf likes reading the weather on the dashboard before leaving
