#Voice Assistant (Wyoming, speech-to-phrase, piper) crashes whole HA Server on RPi 5 4GB

Hi!

I've been setting up my little HA environment for the last couple of days and now I would like to integrate a voice assistant.

I have configured everything according to https://www.home-assistant.io/voice_control/voice_remote_local_assistant/ and after setup, it seems to run stable as long as I don't try to use it.

I want to interact with the voice assistant through the HA app on my Android phone (OnePlus 9 Pro running Android 14).
I can open the app, but when I tap the kebab menu in the top right and then "Assist (A)", the whole server crashes with the host RPi turning off (status LED goes red) and that's it.

Troubleshooting steps so far:

  1. completely removed all voice integration stuff (Wyoming, speech-to-phrase, piper).
  2. Rebooted the RPi.
  3. Tried different client device (Samsung Galaxy Fold 5 instead of my OP9P)

No luck yet. I'm happy about any input on what could be causing this and how to fix it.

Thanks in advance!

Would assume it runs out of memory, an rpi is likely way to weak to run local voice afaik

...oh? There's no mention of that in the doc I linked! Could that be a problem even with speech-to-phrase?

Running out of memory shouldn't crash the whole system though 😳
I'll see if I can monitor the RAM usage and test again.

The final goal is to run voice in a separate VM and just have it give commands to HA anyways, but I'd love to have a T0 implementation just using HA.

I'm no expert in these fields, just sounds very much like running out of resources in some way, so yeah, I'd start with montioring them + checking logs to see if you could locate the issue

The logs are completely void of any information - probably because it just crashes without hanging or erroring out first. But I'll try to monitor it some way

Maybe underpowering, or faulty brick?
