I'm trying to figure out how to connect the two. So far I've gathered that I need an "ESP" to communicates the smartshunt's bluetooth signals to wifi for HA to read but I don't really know what that is.

I have my Victron SmartShunt integrated into Home Assistant. You need a Bluetooth Proxy...https://esphome.io/components/bluetooth_proxy.html

I'm monitoring these... Blue Smart IP65 Charger 12/15, Smart BatteryProtect 12/24V-65A, SmartShunt 500A/50mV .
