#Upgrade from Pi4 to Pi5

So, right now, my homeassistant is running on a Pi4 4GB, but am planning to upgrade to a Pi5 8gb / 16gb because I want to give Home Assistant Voice a go, but am not sure if a Pi4 with 4gb ram is strong enough for that.

Now my question is:
can I just take the microsd from the Pi4 and put it in the Pi5, or should I do a clean install for the Pi5, then restore a backup made on the Pi4?

Any help is appreciated, I never migrated my homeassistant instance before

further notes: you should not use an SD card, it will be slow and will fail.
also even a rpi5 will struggle with some voice stuff.

I have a dedicated Pi for homeassistant, and so far it has worked without issues. I have not really looked in to the voice requirements, but can always move that to my main server if it improves the performance

you could run HA on your rpi and off load the STT and TTS to another system if you wanted to.

Nabu Casa recommends at least a N100 but if you don't use english or want a better model you really need more power and/or a GPU.

i run my HA server on a n150 but i offload STT to my "big" server with a gpu running a bigger whisper model.

in any case still, a SD card is bad.

never had issues with HA on the sd card, picked one meant for long continuous use

all Pi4 ssd mounts I see use the USB interface, are those the right ones?

yeah the rpi4 doesnt have the pcie bus available like the rpi5. but yeah even on usb its a better option.

although this is one of the reasons rpi's are used less now. by the time you get a rpi/case/ssd-hat/ssd/psu you might as well get a mini pc

true, but in my case I prefer having the PIs, as they can used for other things by simply switching the sd card

had a project for work, switch out the sd, back to tinkering at work, easy

Virtualization on a "real" PC can achieve the same unless you need GPIO.

yes, but if you have to be at different points in a building, placing a small pi for a few months is way easier

i dont take down my HA server though. stuff stops working around the house if i do that 😛

and work doesn't allow virtualization
