Hello everyone!

I'm starting my journey on automation and smart devices.

While we already have some Dobiss modules ready to start home automation, the module required to hook everything up to Home Assistant etc is €1200 excl. VAT.

What do I have:

  • P1 meter for electricity/gas consumption and solar panels' production
  • MiniPC running a HA VM
  • Somfy IO screens

So I looked around and came up with the following options:

Base set:

  • SONOFF Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle CC2652P attached to my miniPC running HA in the attic - €19
  • Somfy Connecivity Kit (to connect Somfy IO screens), downstairs near router - €69
  • THIRDREALITY Motion Sensor (4-pack) to automate some lights - €60.99
  • ReoLink Wi-Fi doorbell - €104

Climate control
We've found that the temp sensors on our LG A/C units isn't really reliable so I would use these:

  • SONOFF SNZB-02P Zigbee Humidity sensor x5 (living room/kitchen + 3 bedrooms + attic) - €88
    OR
  • Aqara temp and humidity x5 (living room/kitchen + 3 bedrooms + attic) - €86

Lights - downstairs

  • TRADFRI lightbulbs x 6 - €60
  • TRADFRI spotlights x14 - €112

Lights - first floor

  • TRADFRI lightbulbs x 11 - €111
  • TRADFRI spotlights x4 - €32

Lights - attic

  • TRADFRI spotlights x4 - €32

Plan

  • Setup some home automations:
    • Turns lights on in toilets when you enter
    • Turn all lights off when both me and wife are away from home
  • Create a dashboard that we can use to check power consumption (i.e. when is a good time to start dishwasher etc..), shared calendar, waste collection, weather, ...

Questions

  • Obvious one, am I chosing good brands to get started?
  • Is there a good solar sensor to automate screens behaviour?

This would cost me around €685-€690.

Any comments or concerns for this setup?

Small bump.
Should I get a slzb-06 instead of the USB dongle so I'm not limited in where to place it?

i would get the slzb-06 (i got the m model) and would recommend that over a usb , then you, as you say, arent limited to having the zigbee controller reliant on being whereever you're putting your HA server.

@autumn tusk on the subject of doorbell. Wanted to mention a rather negative expirience with battery powered doorbell from another company.

The issue is, to get most battery life, i'm forced to disable a lot of features (so it lasts at least 2 months)

There is also a fairly long delay when you try to connect to it, guessing it's due to wifi not always being on to conserve power.

Battery power is also not an option if you want to monitor/record video in an NVR.
