#Hardware for Frigate

Hello,

I have existing ThinkCentre where I'm running Frigate + HA + nginx + stuff.. it works mostly great, but it appears that the CPU it has (i5-6500T) has some bugs when running with a constant load, not to mention using the iGPU in it. So it keeps crashing. At least daily.

So I'm afraid I need a new hardware for Frigate at least. I have 8 mediocre cameras which I would like to record and detect objects from few of them.

Frigate official docs recommends only Beelink EQ13, which is out of the stock, and mentions that EQ14 has some issues.

I would not like to buy any more machines 'with issues', so I'd like to hear recommendations from you which hardware you are actually using with several cameras.

Thanks for any tips!

Somebody just mentioned that after updating CPU to i7-7700T there were no issues anymore. That would be also interesting option to try 🤔

Which OS do you run? Is the UEFI firmware up to date? Microcode installed? Did you check the kernel logs? Did you check temperatures?

I'm running Debian Bookworm. Not sure about those two things, but there are no kernel logs or kernel crashlog is not generated when crash occurs. Temperatures are low.

There is a long discussion in Frigate forums about the issue where several i5-6500T users share the same issue. Somebody just mentioned there that updating to newer CPU fixed all the issues, so that might be way to go and save some euros.

Could you link me to it? Crash can mean a whole lot of things. What happens exactly? As for microcode see here: https://wiki.debian.org/Microcode
I'm guessing the frigate folks know better in this case.

For example these

https://github.com/blakeblackshear/frigate/issues/6477
https://github.com/blakeblackshear/frigate/issues/8470

by checking those looks like I had also some two week rows without crashes, but now they are constant again.

By "crash" in this case means that system completely freezes, does not react any input, nothing shown in the screen or in the logs. CPU consumes constant 16W power.

and thanks for those tips. I need to check whether there would be any updates available

Intel's 6th generation Skylake processors, and the related Kaby Lake processors, had a bug discovered in late 2016 that could cause system freezes or unpredictable behavior during complex workloads, particularly when using applications like Prime95
I looked into that and found this: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/01/intel-skylake-bug-causes-pcs-to-freeze-during-complex-workloads/
Intel has developed a fix, and is working with hardware partners to distribute it via a BIOS update.
Fortunately things like ThinkCentre from big companies like lenovo usually get BIOS updates. Unfortunately they aren't always trivial to install without windows.

Ok thanks for that. I need to check whether there would be update available. I bought my PC as "refurbished" and understood that possible updates would have been installed, but need to check that again.

As for what you actually asked the N100 might be sourced more easily. The main difference is that the GPU has more units. How big of a difference that makes I cannot tell you:

Oh there might be actually Bios update dated March 2025 available..
