I noticed there are two different VPN add-ons available to install in HA. I’m curious what the intended purpose with these are and does it make sense to install one of them and use from phone or tablet when traveling?

You just answered your own question. That's the intended purpose....

I use Zerotier, personally. It's free for up to 10 connected devices. And you really only need the HA and any remote devices (phones, basically) on it.
