I am trying to get Alea to turn al the lights in say the kitchen off, but it always fails to recognise an areas and says there is nothing setup for that? Is it possible for alexa to turn all the lights off in a particular area or should I be looking at a different voice assistant? I can't be bothered going into Alexa and creating another bunch of routines... it's just double handling.
#using areas with Alexa - is it possible?

can you make a scene with all the lights switched off then expose that scene that when called turns off all the lights?
or ditch alexa and go custom 🙂
See, I could create additional complexities; however, that kinda becomes cumbersome and hard to manage.
I see when I use HA Assist on my iPhone it picks it up easily and turns off all the lights in a particular area without doing any other configuration... NICE!
Might look at a custom or HA voice assist device
Alexa is proprietary crap, and integrates with third-party systems only nominally. Don't expect miracles.
If you are just up for giving commands to do X and Y like me i've been very successful with Voice Preview and Atom Echos.
Alexa and Google just make things difficult. Apart from that i use shortcuts in Siri
