#Downstream Devices?

Why couldn't you just add the template fan energy entity to energy dashboard?
Some say that using the sum of the entities is not a good practice, but there are some other tools like PowerCalc, which could be helpful.
What "template fan energy entity"? I went through the template fan documentation, and there isn't even any mention of energy, and there is no "fan energy entity".
To clarify, what I have is a Shelly 2.5pm, where the devices two independently monitored on/off switches are used together in place of the original manual 4-position switch. The two independent energy entities do show in the energy dashboard, in different colours and ordering. I want to see a single "hope much power is the fan using", so I can compare it as a whole single device, to other fans and everything else.
Do you mean just create a sensor entity to sum the energy entities together? I was not aware that would work, though now that I think about it, I guess there's no good reason it wouldn't, and the upstream device setting may then work to hide the original energy entities. If this is the case, template entities should probably have a note on how to handle energy measurements in cases like these. I just made an energy sensor to test the idea, but I also came across someone making a power entity, and then integrating it into an energy entity. Should I create a power entity too? If so, should I do the energy integration thing, or just go with a pair of summing sensors?
A brief look at PowerCalc, suggests it's for estimating energy use, which isn't what I need. Though, does it handle the dual power/energy sensor thing for you, too? Also, are the power entities actually used for anything? (I've only recently started adding energy monitoring, so relatively new to this side of HA.)
