#Android companion app - Settings

Guys...does anyone know why on the android app, the yellow gear (the one that configures the servers the app is connecting to) is missing?

On iOS, when the app starts, it appears for 1-2 seconds (enough so you can click on it), but not on Android?!

Talking about this:

On iOS, at least, its purpose is to allow you to get to the settings and configuration the connection if you can't connect to HA. Maybe on Android it only shows it if it tries and fails, rather than when it's atttempting to connect?

Yes, and I can specify internal / external url for a home (multiple homes)

#

Which is great, because I have 3.

#

But when I try - on android I can only add 1, and no "gear" ....

ancient yarrow
#

it sounds like you really just want multiserver

#

which the iOS app supports. I don't know if Android does

Hopefully someone from the app devs would know more...

#

Trying to debug push notifications that I receive on iOS but not on Android ....

on android we have a pop-up that will show up in 10 seconds if the connection was not successful

to access app settings on both iOS an Android go to Settings > companion app

#

from there you can additional servers and chagne app settings etc...

Btw, looks like the android's version of the "yellow settings gear" was moved into Settings -> Companion app.

ancient yarrow
#

That's where the settings for both mobile apps have always been

#

The issue is that you can only get there if you can access HA. The gear or whatever is when you can't access HA

indigo arrow
#

might be a good place to try and have some consistency between the 2 there. The pop-up and gear serve a similar purpose but have different behavior. The pop-up on android not only lets you go to settings but to wait or refresh the page. The time difference between when it appears is interesting

@RobC The Gear appears on the iOS app - always when you start the app. For like 1-2 seconds, then it hides.

#

that's what got me confused at first, because it never did appear on android ...

I think it's based on how fast it connects to HA. It shows until it connects, which could be forever or could be 1-2s

#

Anyway, I'll leave this to the devs and stop speculating

oak glen
#

for me - it doesn't matter if I connect locally or remotely - always shows up

#

๐Ÿ™‚

indigo arrow
#

for android we wait 10 seconds for the frontend to communicate to the app that it has connected...after that time period we show the pop-up or not

oak glen
#

got it

indigo arrow
#

it used to be 5 but a few users with slower connections noticed the pop-up would appear and disappear that confused them

oak glen
#

that happens on iOS then.. maybe it's worth pinging the devs ๐Ÿ™‚

indigo arrow
#

yea just pinged it in our project channel...worth a discussion to see if we can align on it. Were you aware of how to access the app settings before this?

oak glen
#

Nop, always just clicked on the yellow gear when I open the app.

indigo arrow
#

yea almost once a week or so we have to point out where that is

oak glen
#

IMHO the yellow gear should remain visible for at least 5 seconds after the app starts, easier to select the home you want to connect to

#

instead of waiting XX seconds to get a timeout, then try to switch

indigo arrow
#

for android we have some gestures

oak glen
#

Consistency is key in these areas.. so if the iOS has a gear - the android should too

indigo arrow
#

should make switching between servers fast

#

this was the first time i saw that icon ๐Ÿ™ˆ

oak glen
#

you're android user...

#

I was too, 6-7 years ago switched to iOS

#

and today was the first day I didn't see that icon (had to use an android phone to connect)

#

so... consistency

#

don't make the people wonder "what's going on"

Wouldn't be a problem if everybody just chose the same one and that it's iOS
