#Automations need to be configured in UTC time?

Why is (apparently just my) home assistant so absolutely horrible with UTC time?

I'm trying to build an automation, set the time to 0930, and it triggers at 04:30. WTAF

Do I seriously need to configure automations in UTC??

This has to be some sort of Home Assistant bug as I've posted about this same issue regarding the historic energy usage panes as well.

What's your timezone and location set to in home assistant? Settings -> General

strange pendant
#

it also doesn't account for DST on its own, but that's a separate issue

#

my only other suspicion is that somehow it's getting messed up from BIOS time, but the system should be accounting for that with UTC.

real vapor
#

That's definitely odd. My time based automations all work. What system are you running on?

strange pendant
#

HAOS on a mini-pc, nothing special.

#

Don't get me wrong, my automations work, it's just that I have to configure them 5 hours ahead of where i want them to actually fire.

real vapor
#

Do you have the bios time properly set? Keep in mind that haos is basically Linux, which prefers the bios to be in UTC

strange pendant
#

turns out i need to check it anyway since i just tried to restart it and now it's not coming back online.

real vapor
#

If you updated os it takes a while.

strange pendant
#

no updates, just a restart.

#

i adjusted the timezone and rebooted the whole unit to see what it does

#

ye same thing, still 5 hours behind my input

real vapor
#

Again, make sure the time is correct in the bios. And remember, it's supposed to be UTC time in the bios.

#

I'm not sure if haos includes an ntpdate binary or not.

strange pendant
#

it doesn't include datetimectl that's for sure

real vapor
#

Do you have SSH set up for remote access?

strange pendant
#

I don’t remember but that doesn’t help me for bios time. I have CLI access now but let me check the bios time rq

#

BIOS time is correct. It’s UTC.

#

it was one day ahead but that’s insignificant.

#

Any SSH ideas?

real vapor
#

If it's too far ahead, it won't ever set the time right

#

Try running the command "ntpdate" all by itself, what does it do?

strange pendant
#

i mean, i fixed it and it's still 5 hours ahead.

#

-bash: ntpdate: command not found

real vapor
#

Meh, ok gimme a sec, lemme play with mine a bit.

strange pendant
#

does yours do what mine is doing?

real vapor
#

No, all my time stuff is correct

#

What time does it show when you type date

strange pendant
#

The correct local time.

Well, then this is above my pay grade, because time is setz timezone is set, and I really have no other ideas.

strange pendant
#

Thanks for running through some basics with me.

Do you have evergy monitoring items?

real vapor
#

No

strange pendant
#

oof

eternal yacht
#

check the profile section

#

bottom left cl ick in your name

strange pendant
#

im there

eternal yacht
#

make sure time zone there isn't conflicting with your home assistant server setting

strange pendant
#

lol what

eternal yacht
#

heh well at least you figured it out

strange pendant
#

how is my local time zone set to iceland

real vapor
#

You have your location set up incorrectly. 🤣

strange pendant
#

i never set this though, where's that even coming from

eternal yacht
#

i think local time zone uses your computer time zone or something, not entirely sure

#

server time zone is the one set up in HA settings

strange pendant
#

that's what it's currently set to though

#

(server time zone)

eternal yacht
#

i'm not really sure where it gets local time zone from, but i suspect just changing that setting to server time zone will at least fix the issue youre having

strange pendant
#

it was already set to that

eternal yacht
#

huh

#

i would at least try setting it to local time zone and see how that affects setting up your automations

#

since somethings clearly going on there

strange pendant
#

ok that's weird.

#

it lines up now

#

but i'm not in reykjavic

#

my brain can't handle what the heck is going on, omg

eternal yacht
#

lol

real vapor
#

Check your location

strange pendant
#

location in settings is fine

real vapor
#

Weird.

strange pendant
#

ok so here's an odd one

mystic frost
#

The “your local time zone” selection comes from the computer your browser is on. It has nothing to do with HA.

strange pendant
#

everything lines up visually... things are resetting at midnight (solves energy problem) and my automation times line up.

#

except now home assistant is 4 hours in the future.

#

so i have to find out where it's getting this wack timezone from

#

computer is set properly to EDT - New York.

#

ok it's a browser issue.

#

tried it with Chrome and I'm back to square one.

#

actually scratch that the automations line up but now my energy issue is unsolved again.

#

i can handle that, but the time was unacceptable. looks like i have to just figure out what my browser is doing

#

Bingo. Found it. That solves that.

#

Thanks all. 👍🏼

So I use LIbreWolf, a firefox clone that has a heavy focus on privacy preservation. It uses a tool called Resist Fingerprinting.

#

Among other things, it includes timezone spoofing.

#

That's why HA thought I was in Reykjavic.

real vapor
#

Ahh

strange pendant
#

once I tested it with Chrome I narrowed it down immediately.

#

but it still doesn't solve the energy graph issue - i might post again for that.

real vapor
#

So does LW have an option to not do that on local network sites?

strange pendant
#

No.
