#Trying to get tp-link smart plugs to work in Home Assistant OS.

I installed haos onto my old laptop using a usb key where i installed ubuntu and the haos image and restored it to the laptop. I am pretty new at this. I then unsuccessfully tried to add tp-link devices and either it would not verify my credentials or could not see the plugs. I started researching and found this https://github.com/python-kasa/python-kasa?tab=readme-ov-file#readme. Its a python script to fix / override where tp blocked local access to the ui. I am trying to run the process on the host (laptop) and it's at a ha> prompt. Please point me to the next step or a better fix.

Thanks

once the devices are on your network they should be picked up by the kasa integration directly.

Are they on your network currently? Have you tried adding them by host IP?

They can be seen by the tapo app (replaced kasa). on the same network as my host machine. The userid and password do not authenticate. I even went on to tp-link and tp_link cloud and reset to the same thing and that did not work. Look for the next step.

what happens if you try and add the device manually by ip on the integration?

warm hemlock
#

will not authenticate. I am thinking about using one of my other emails and creating a new id and using that to setup one of the plugs into tapo and then go to trying with ha

silent hazel
#

so after inputting the ip it asks for credentials?

warm hemlock
#

yes

looks like tplink went full tapo conversaion on kasa devices then.

some people have suggested that the local control on tapo devices reappears if you block them from internet access. are you able to block the devices from accessing the internet on your network?

warm hemlock
#

yes i have them static / manually assigned and one of the options is block from the internet. Are you suggesting i block one and then try to get it going ?

will do. give me a few and we will see what happens. Thanks for your help

no worries, hope it works. tapo (for now) seem to have a fall back to local control but i wouldnt trust them to keep it that way. at some point they will get a firmware push to disable that (although not if they are blocked from inet so keep it that way)

makes sense. HA and this community rocks. I cant believe i ever though evil alexa was worth the effort...

#

if your buying more, i recommend shelly devices. they have shown they can be trusted (for now) and local control is great

warm hemlock
#

that was my next question. Thanks

#

when you said power cycle were you refering to unpluging the plug or reboot ha ?

silent hazel
#

the plug

warm hemlock
#

cool

silent hazel
#

so it fully reboots and knows its cut off

warm hemlock
#

still wants to authenticate... do i force it to go in discovery mode ??

silent hazel
#

i would try restarting home assistant at this point to see if it works after a reset there too.

#

might have to reset it to default to get it out of "cloud mode" or something

warm hemlock
#

will try... if i have to recycle the router as well as last option. I'll update date as i go. if you have to go i understand....

silent hazel
#

tp-link really are a pain

warm hemlock
#

i thought it was just me...

silent hazel
#

nope, tplink have been slowly closing stuff off and making it more difficult for a while. maybe you have a new batch/new firmware that finally forces the issue

#

they have been slowly discontinuing kasa in favour of the more locked down tapo.

warm hemlock
#

ha rebooted.... trying again. Sound like i going to a new brand for sure once i get some bucks... just got laid off and looking for new options

#

let me try one more thing....

#

they got this thing locked down.... nothing is working. i will try few more things and go from there.... I appreciate the help. Gotta get some z's in a bit

#

forcing the plug to factory reset... last try.... to stuborn for my own good
