#Adding second POE OTBR?

Hey everyone, I've been running a ZBT-1 as my thread coordinator on a RPi5. It is mostly stable but I still get random periods where every device goes offline. In an effort to increase redundancy, I bought a SLZB-06 and flashed the matter over thread firmware to it with the intention of running it via POE on the top floor of my house (since my server with HA is in the basement). Looking at this thread it seems like it might not be possible or recommended to do this. Is that the case?

thanks for the link @strange tendon . any tips on resolving random drop offs? cc @silent obsidian it seems like its almost on a cron to reset or something. I only have the ZBT-1 as a border router.

So it happens all 4 hours. Which hardware are you using for HAOS? Any information in the logfile?

I have HAOS on a laptop & the ZBT zigbee dongle. I'm having issues with devices dropping off or becoming disabled as well -- most are in the basement. My ZBT is on the main floor. Wanted to buy SLZBT as well but didn't know which one to get, assuming this is the issue. Have you gotten this issue fixed?

Nope

I'd consider using the SLZB-6 as the thread coordinator in lieu of the zbt-1 but AFAIK, theres no way to cleanly migrate the radio without repairing all the devices. and I've already reset this network 5 times

# keen cloak That looks like it’s for zigbee

that being said, I switched from a skyconnect zigbee coordinator to the slzb-06m without repairing but noticed no improvements (almost a degredation) in performance. but I've yet to switch the channels to 24 which is shown as the optimal channel according to the slzb dashboard (whereas the zha auto select chose 20)

I plan on keeping the ZBT-1 in place and using the SLZB-06M as a router/repeater. I think my issue is that the finished basement is like a faraday cage down there. LOL With the hvac vents/stacks, the plumbing, electrical, steel beams, etc are all hidden in the basement ceiling...Plus the metal framing for the drop-down ceiling too.

I'm going to put the SLZB-06M into unifi AP (PoE) that's centrally located on the main floor. If that doesn't get through all that crap in the basement ceiling, then I'll move it into the faraday cage (my basement lol) and see if that's any better.

Does your router/modem, bridges/hubs, hardware or anything else in your setup have scheduled runs/updates/reboots that match the zigbee drop intervals? Your drops look like it's way too rhythmic to be random. (Mine are as random as whack-a-mole; devices just pop up whenever they feel like it, then disappear. lol)

# keen cloak that being said, I switched from a skyconnect zigbee coordinator to the slzb-06m...

I am unsure if channel 24 is a good solution. Do you have many neighbors? You should and your neighbors should not use WiFi 2.4GHz channel 11. Otherwise it would interfere with Thread or Zigbee channel 24. Look at this:

https://www.metageek.com/training/resources/zigbee-wifi-coexistence/

Even though this post is for Zigbee and WiFi coexistence, Zigbee and Thread use the same channel scheme.

  • Good channels for Thread and/or Zigbee are 15, 20 and 25
  • Channel 11 is much more interfered by WiFi 2.4GHz, than channel 15, 20 and 25
  • Channel 26 would be perfect, but I remember a user here, who had a lot of problems with channel 26, that were solved by switching the Thread channel to 25 magically

Apple uses channel 25 by default.

I have my 2.4 network constrained to channel 1. I can't control my neighbors wifi

#

my thread network is on 25

@keen cloak Ok, are your issues solved now? 😃

unfortunately not @strange tendon

Most probably you have a fault border router or routing Thread device causing this.
Because the pattern is this precise, check if something is rebooting at standard intervals, maybe your WiFi AP ?

how can I check for a fault border router? Right now I just have the 1 zbt1. is there an easy way to migrate the radio similar to zigbee? I have a spare slzb. I can check my unifi logs for restarts but I tried looking for that before and came up with nada

How many Thread devices do you have?

Remove their batteries or remove them from current. Reconnect only one Thread Router device, wait 6 or more hours and check your statistics again. If you don’t see any issues, add the next device until you find the faulty device.

Start with the devices that are closest to your TBR and end the test with the devices that are furthest away

If the issue comes back with first Thread device try another device. If the issue persists, the issue may come from your ZBT-1 or your OTBR.
