Hello I was able to add this door/window sensor through zigbee but the only sensors it picked up was on or off which don’t update. Just trying to make a simple automation when the door is open

Searching for loocam on the ZHA compatablity list does not list any called Loocom, so it is most likely it has been detected as the wrong device. Did you check the list before you purchased. If not you might need an expert to help you write a custom quirk for it.

I have always used ZHA, so can't comment on the alternative. I tend to stick to Aqara for my Zigbee devices, but have a few from Ikea which all work well with my SkyConnect stick.

Out of interest I currently have 42 devices on Zigbee and 21 on ESP Home, so not a large system.

11 zigbee, 1 zwave, 4 wifi and a ble device in total, neither the ble or one of the wifi devices works on HA (yet)
