#How fast is the earthquake integration

I live in Bangkok and we had a serious earthquake here earlier today. As it was happening, I first thought I was getting unwell and I’m annoyed with myself for taking so long to initiate action.

Once safely outside and eventually grabbing a coffee, I started wondering how I could have prevented that delay. I’m not sure there are any smart devices that detect earthquakes.

But I did see the USGS earthquake integration. And my HA is already set up with a “drop everything now” alarm setup that I could trigger. I’m wondering about this integration… would this trigger fast enough to use it as an alarm system?

(btw, I have no idea if such a warning system even exists and if there is any point to all this, just exploring options)

It says it polls every 5 minutes. How often the data it polls is updated I do not know.

Hmm ok so that can’t tell me “you’re experiencing an earthquake” that I was hoping for. On to the next options then! Thanks.

USGS is using official government sources that pick up the earthquake remotely, and report back periodically. Even if it was realtime, there would still be some delay because of the small number of monitoring stations and therefore the distances between them and fact you need multiple readings to estimate size and location. Google crowdsources earthquake detection using Android phones, they were testing it in New Zealand and California a few years ago, but I don't know if they ever rolled it out wider than that.
