yeah an automation is exactly the tool to use
2 triggers, 1 which turns the switch on at specified time and 1 which turns the switch off at a specified time
why wouldn't you use an automation?

but i want to switch the whole thing on/off on different days of the week at different times, sometimes several times a day. and then it gets confusing in the ui

well the more complex you make it the more complex its going to look in the UI but if you lay it out in a way that makes sense its not that hard. either way automation is still the way to do it
