Hello everyone,

I own a raspberry pi 3b + and setup homeassistant.

I'm waiting for my smlight slzb-06 to arrive.

Is it worth buying a Dell OptiPlex 5050 MFF for $110 CAD used on ebay and setting up home assistant that way?

I read the pi is meh and the micro SD is prone to failure.

I also have a an extra nvme I can use.

I'm not into huge automation with 100s of devices.

Just a small beginner setup with a handful of devices.

Thank you

a 3b+ is going to struggle a bit and you dont want to use a sd card long term as it will be slow and fail

if your buying hardware specifically for home assistant then:

if you want a low power system then a Home Assistant Green is a great option

however if you think you are going to grow and also run other stuff on the system then something like an N100 mini PC is a better option something like a Beelink S12 for example

Hi @cinder star,
The 3b is only 1gb of memory, which is not enough for most things. It is on the bump list for support right now.

You can probasbly find an N100 Beelink for about $130, and out preform that used thing is CPU and power usage...

Is this was anyone good for a beelink?

I can't tell you if it s a good deal but for virtualization I'd recommend at least 16G RAM and 250G storage.
Otherwise it's okay.

I used a 3B+ for a couple of weeks because I had it lying around

It definitely struggled - I’d often lose connectivity and the interface was laggy. It overheated repeatedly etc

It was getting slower as I added integrations and devices too, so if it was struggling that badly with even a few test devices I doubt it would have been looking great with more

I definitely wouldn’t recommend it

I now have a J5005 NUC with 8GB RAM and it’s much better, running Proxmox, HA, and Frigate (one camera, but with the Google TPU it’ll be fine with a few I’m sure)

That specific CPU you mentioned in title has some problems with encoding & detecting objects with Frigate in case you end up using it for video storaging later. The iGPU it has, has some problems with linux / drivers.

I have that same in my thinkcentre, it works great otherwise for HA and lots more.

It was about $117 CAD with the discounts so similar pricing to the mini pc
