I'm looking for some sensors for doors and windows that rely totally local. I had already had ring sensors before using HA so decided to use them via Mqtt but requires ring cloud api. I've noticed at some times the sensors drop out or say open. I suspect for what ever reason they aren't updating status properly some times.

Seems like everything ring/Amazon makes is junk.

Hi, I use some cheap Zigbee door/window sensors from Aliexpress with AAA rechargeable batteries and are surprisingly reliable. The price range is between 5/10 euros buying from Spain

I'm using the Ikea ones and I haven't had any issues with them hooked to a Z2M network and Sonoff Dongle E v2 as a coordinator. They don't accept firmware updates, if that has any relevance to you

is zigbee pretty much the go to method for door sensors these days?

Zigbee is probably the best balance in terms of cost and features

Aqara sensors are just really really solid, I haven't found anything else that compares to them in speed and their reliability is very solid

The biggest "issue" with zigbee is that there are some garbage devices, but just stick to community recommended devices and you shouldn't have a problem

I'm seeing on the aqara site that their hub is required? Is there a work around

You just need any zigbee stick, you don't need their hub specifically. Highly recommend just getting the zbt-1 from nabu casa or you can look at some more recommended options here
