I'm looking to upgrade my homelab to a Proxmox cluster with High Availability, but I’m not very experienced with Proxmox, so I could use some extra advice.

Current Hardware Setup:
o 1x Old PC : AMD Athlon™ II X4 610e Processor / 16GB RAM / 1x 240GB SSD + 1x 2TB SSD (HA) + 2x 2TB WD HDD
o 2x HP EliteDesk 800 G2 Mini: Intel i5-6400T / 16GB RAM / 1x 2TB SSD + 1x 2TB NVMe

Current Setup & Priorities:
• Running:
o Home Assistant (VM on the 2TB SSD)
o Plex (Container on a 2TB HDD)
• Main Priority: Ensuring uptime for Home Assistant
• Future Expansion: Setting up a Frigate VM (with USB Google Coral)
• Storage Strategy: Based on my research, replication seems like a better choice than CEPH for my setup.

Questions & Considerations:

  1. Mixed Hardware Compatibility
    • Can I include different types of hardware in a Proxmox cluster, especially regarding storage?
    • Are there any specific considerations or limitations I should be aware of?
  2. Cluster Setup & Live Migration
    • Can I set up the Proxmox cluster while my current system is running?
  3. Version Compatibility & Updates
    • Do all Proxmox nodes need to run the same version?
    • If so, can I update a live Proxmox server running Home Assistant without issues?
    • Will Home Assistant keep the same IP address after an update?
  4. Replacing Hardware in the Cluster
    • In a few months, I plan to replace the old PC with a NUC.
o Can I directly replace node 1, or do I need to add an extra node first and then remove the old one?
o Would it be better to buy the NUC now before setting everything up?
    • Are there any other important factors I should consider before setting up the cluster?
