Why isn't there a media player integration in the companion app, e.g. to have Music Assistant play songs to the phone's headphones? I can find requests for this feature in forums reaching back to 2020. Browser_mod didn't work for me and also seems to be a workaround.

you could try installing a sqeezebox player app on your phone and adding it to music assistant with the slimproto player provider option inside MA.
this would allow you to select it as a speaker within the UI to play music/transfer to other speakers etc...
never tried it but quick google shows there are some options. (e.g. SqueezePlayer - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.bluegaspode.squeezeplayer&hl=en_GB&pli=1 )
maybe worth looking at this approach. there might be other better options for exposing phone as a speaker to MA but thats probably more of a question for the MA discord

Browser Mod has a beta of 2.4.1-beta.3 (will be released soon) that fixes up media player issues. While not exactly what you are after, Browser Mod media player should work with the deta and give you a solution.
