Hi guys, completely new here. I've been hearing about home assistant for a long time now but only now have I been in the position to actually try setting one up. I've been reading into people's recommendations on the hardware, and it seems like zigbee and z-wave are particularly popular for locks at least.

For my own setup, I'm looking for recommendations for door locks and entry sensors. I'd like to start off with just 2 door deadbolt locks and approx 4-5 door sensors. HA will run off an older x86 PC I've had running truenas. Location is in the USA.

I've seen some people recommend the Kwikset 620, which uses z-wave. But I also noticed matching z-wave door sensors seem to be a lot more expensive than zigbees. Is it typical to end up with multiple protocol dongles to maximize value? Or should I pick and focus on a single protocol in my case?

Any hardware recommendations for the lock and entry sensors that would make life easier for someone starting out? Appreciate any input. In the meantime I'll be looking for zigbee lock reviews. 🙂
