#8 gb ram, too much?

4 is probably fine unless you plan on running loads of addons. just remember to get a ssd hat. running on a SD card is not recommended.
No but a pi might not be the "best" choice: https://gist.github.com/Impact123/6ee130240bdc6a7fed2d5224616544a0
If you use "proper" hardware you can upgrade the memory later, for example.
HA has a habit of opening doors for many other things to come which might need more resources down the line.
i should write some of those 😛
look at a n100 mini pc instead. it seems more expensive but by the time you put a case/ssd-hat/ssd on a rpi theres not much difference and you get more "bang for your buck" with a miini pc
ya i am planning on getting some MS-01 to build a home-lab.
any of these on this pic (hope it's somewhat readable) that i should go for as m.2 HAT
and what about RTC battery?
i guess the pi 5 m.2 hat+ is enough? can't tell the difference 🤔
It might be better if you link to the pictured page.
it's a screenshot but some friends also just recommended me not to go pi5
and also linked to a n100
yeah n100 is a good choice. i have had sucsess with beelink devices
Note that you cannot replace the CPU or add (large) PCI(e) devices with most Mini PCs. Think about if you might want to expand things like that in the future. Unless space or the absolute lowest power consumption is a concern a used (U)SFF PC may give you more options and it's probably also cheaper.
I use a fanless 4 port N100 Mini PC as firewall. Power usage and noise and size was a concern here. It works fine at 12W. I wouldn't use it as a normal server though. I just recently expanded mine with a GPU because I became more interested in AI. I couldn't easily do that with a Mini PC. Just some food for thought and why I suggest what I suggest.
There are also waves of "old" hardware every once in a while when big companies rotate to newer pc's. German seller just had over 500 dell optiplex micro pc's for sale with quadcores 8gb ram and 64gb ssd's.
Those are worth having a look for
usually cheap to. I paid 44€
A little bigger than a N100, not much tho. but also quite a bit less expensive
I've been running HAOS in a VM with 2 GB of RAM and it only uses 1 GB
Just Code Server alone can take multiple.
I guess my setup is not very complicated compared to some, but it seems like a basic setup really doesn't use much RAM at all.
