#iOS location tracking not working when not at home

Both me and my girlfriend have the companion app on our iOS devices but it is not reporting away when outside of the home.

Both devices have full location tracking enabled with background refresh enabled but neither one update away.

Does anyone have any suggestions as automations are not working due to location changes not being tracked?

can your companion app connect to home assistant when your not at home?
e.g. have you set up external access?

#

your device might know its away but has no way of telling home assistant if its not connected

Yes, i am using Home Assistant Cloud 😕

are the devices set to connect via the external address? e.g. can you open HA and access it when not at home (or disconnected from the home network)

Yeah, currently showing as connected via "Remote UI URL"

okay, just wanted to check off the easy things. I take it you have the home zone set up correctly in HA and the location tracker entity of the device set to the person entity?
much passed these config steps I dont know much about ios devices so hopefully someone else can chime in.

Thanks Michael - yes the person entity has the devices tied to them and the home zone is set up in HA.

I have gone through the documentation on the companion app page and cant see anything i have missed - i am hoping someone might have had a similar issue and can point me in the right direction

If you check your mobile app integration do you recognize all phones there? Are there duplicate phones?

No, just that one and my macbook. Incidentally that one and my girlfriends iphone are showing the same. last updated when they were connected locally but all have home assistant cloud as the external

Can you delete those entries, force close the app and open it again? It should recreate the entries and as well the webhook which reports the sensors

Reboot the phone could also be helpful to guarantee iOS hasn’t enter a state where location is not relayed to the app

Let me know how it goes, I’ll be offline now but I can continue helping tomorrow
