#Automation to detect when device is powered on

I have a Nintendo Wii and Nintendo Wii U that are both hooked up in my basement. Considering each device uses a sensor bar, I set up a USB sensor bar that plugs into a smart outlet. Up until this point, I've used a Google Assistant command to turn it on and off when playing Wii/Wii U games.

However, I got to thinking this could be a good automation. At first, I set up a device tracker to detect when either the Wii or Wii U IP connects to the network. This works great for the Wii U, but the Wii has intermittent connections (only connects to network when necessary). I then thought that I could set up a "dummy" USB-powered ESP or Pi device that simply connects to the WiFi network (and nothing else) and plug it into the back of the Wii so my device tracker automation tracks that device instead, but this seems less than ideal.

Anyone else have a good idea for this setup?
