#Looking for Lightbulbs

Hello, I just want some lightbulbs with the following:

  1. Local network only; no cloud, no account, no nothing. Security, privacy and no account creation hassle.
  2. RGB controllable (I just want colour and the possibility to not have any of it ๐Ÿ˜Œ)
  3. MQTT possibilities for later on.

Thanks in advance for any recommandations!

For context about my experience: Up to this point I have no IoT device outside of my robot vacuum which is a secondhand S5 Max which I've rooted and installed Valetudo on.

For MQTT bulbs you're looking at things that can run Tasmota or ESPHome

#

And as with all things, where in the world you are matters

steel ruin
#

In EU East here, not sure what I would have on hand.

#

Does it require flashing/rooting/the like?

stoic fossil
#

Maybe, but I know you can buy some pre-flashed

all locally controllable through zigbee

stoic fossil
#

Well, by definition Zigbee stuff isn't cloud, and doesn't require any accounts ๐Ÿ˜‰

Nothing I suggested above requires cloud, or accounts, and they integrate with MQTT

Thanks a lot for all the info!

#

Personally, I'd much prefer flashed devices, ESPHome or Tasmota, but they seem kinda sparse around here (even unflashed, just in general what can be flashed) and I couldn't find something nice.
I think I will start off with Zigbee, see how that pans out and then decide from there

#

Thanks a lot for the info, helps a lot!

Watch with the bulbs - you get what you pay for, mostly

steel ruin
#

What would be a good price?

stoic fossil
#

The older OSRAM bulbs (pre Zigbee 3.0) should be avoided

steel ruin
#

I was thinking NOUS P3Z.

#

Since these are easily available here

#

For good you want Hue, but Innr and Gledopto are also solid

#

Anything Tuya should be run away from

steel ruin
#

I did see some people complaining about connectivity

#

noted!

digital oyster
#

imo $100AUD is a daylight robbery for a lightbulb

stoic fossil
#

Hue is also the gold standard in Zigbee bulbs ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

Plus, Aus gets hammered by pricing of these things

digital oyster
#

damn

stoic fossil
#

They're much more reasonable elsewhere ๐Ÿ˜‰

digital oyster
#

singular lightbub for $130AUD ๐Ÿ˜ญ

steel ruin
#

Philips Hue?

#

11W to 75W

digital oyster
#

@steel ruin I think something a lot better would be a normal dumb lightbulb with a smart switch

steel ruin
#

55 euros for it

digital oyster
#

then you don't have to worry about people turning the light switch on or off

#

or family members getting confused

#

also you can pretty easily get a generic smart switch as they come a dime a dozen, or create your own with an esp32

steel ruin
#

I do want RGB light though

steel ruin
#

Very janky setups, but I also some PCB's for this specific usecase exist and you can just use someone else's gerber files

digital oyster
#

be careful with installing it yourself tho, I know that at least in Australia, it is very illegal to do your own electrical work, even just running ethernet through your attic

#

in case you go down that path

#

I know there are some coloured lights that let you change the colour based on infrared signals

#

but they are those small battery powered ones

#

@stoic fossil how are Lifx bulbs?

#

hmmm

#

would a rgb light strip with a controller suit your needs?

#

you might be able to engineer your own bulb but that takes a lot of eecs knowledge and pcb design software and all that jazz

however electrical work is enforced

#

and if your house burns down as they commonly do, your insurance will find anyway not to pay

steel ruin
#

technically I do have somewhat of a license from HS education, but oh well.

#

I did see and have a lot of people do electrical work effectively unlicensed, but it's reinforced concrete bulidings and fires don't really happen.
