#My iOS companion app crashes when loading the companion app settings screen

The app itself seems to be working okay, but when I load the companion app settings screen from either the gear icon when starting, or the settings screen and then selecting companion app. The setting screen loads, but is mostly unresponsive, and after 20 seconds or so the whole app crashes. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem?

Can you open the companion app settings and quickly jump into debugging >> export logs and send to me?

chilly dirge
#

where would I find that? is it at the bottom? When when I try and scroll the bottom it's laggy and by the time I've scrolled once or so it crashes

#

I found it, but it's not letting me get far enough to save the files anywhere... it crashes before I can pick a destination

#

After about 40 tries I was finally able to get it save the file.

#

max files size is 10meg, my file is 26meg

I’ll check tomorrow. It’s late on my time zone

sounds good take care

Something looks off on your database, but before proceeding can you try a full reboot of your phone?

chilly dirge
#

Full reboot of my phone done... Companion App settings screen still crashes. I should mention that I cleared my database last week because I had way way way too many state entries.

quartz spoke
#

How exactly have you done that?

chilly dirge
#

I did it a few different ways, including using mariadb cli to delete the database and let homeassistant receate it

quartz spoke
#

hm that could be related, perhaps something essential got away with it

#

I'll make some changes in the app and add more logging so perhaps we can find whats going on. Are you using testflight version or App Store right now?

chilly dirge
#

I can try the "Reset app entities database" or "Reset frontend cache" or "Reset" in the debugging screen but I'll have to act super fast before it crashes. I'm using the app store version.

#

Should I try those resets before you go and make changes and get me on testflight? Or that might clear out any chance of finding why this crash happens?

quartz spoke
chilly dirge
#

The resets didn't work, I'm trying the testflight now, and I'm again stuck trying to get the logs to save, it seems to be a race to get them saved before the crash. I'll keep trying.

#

I've tied about 15 times now to export the logs, I'll keep trying but it keeps crashing before I can export them

#

It was able to submit a crash report to testflight

quartz spoke
#

I’ll be off until Monday, but I’ll check it then and let you know if there is something you can do or wait for a fix from my side

#

For now the only last thing I could think of is to try to delete your server from the app, delete the app and download it again

chilly dirge
#

I'll keep trying to get that log export. I'm not in a rush for this to work, but eventually I'd like to setup the actions which is what got me down this road. I'll see if this crashed on my GF's phone too, or if it's just mine.

chilly dirge
#

I'm still unable to export this file... occasionally I feel I have a bit more time, to press the buttons, but it never quite gets there.

quartz spoke
#

I'll prepare some debug build app this week so we can find a solution for that, sorry the delay, it has been busy today

chilly dirge
#

It's no problem, I'm not in any rush.

quartz spoke
#

I just submited a new beta for testflight, it should be available between today and tomorrow

quartz spoke
#

When version 2025.2 becomes available in testflight, check it out, I made 2 changes, one in settings itself (perhaps it wont crash now) and another one that if you shake your phone in home screen it will show debug options (bypassing settings)

chilly dirge
#

The companion settings still crashes the app, but the shake works to bypass and I’m able to export a file

chilly dirge
#

I had my GF test it on her phone and the app crashes in the same spot as mine (She is not on the testflight version) That seems to clue me into it not being my phone at fault.

quartz spoke
#

Its probably related to something wrong or missing in your home assistant itselt, ill check the crashes report this week

chilly dirge
#

I had a connection lost message today when having the app open for a short while. After that, I was able to go into the companion apps section without it locking up. I've accidentally discovered that if the phone is in airplane mode it doesn't lock up when on that screen anymore. I don't know how much that'll help, but it might make it easier to export the log files.

quartz spoke
#

Can you confirm your device, iOS version and exactly testflight build you are?

#

I will try to find you in the crash logs

chilly dirge
#

iPhone 15 Pro Max, iOS: 18.2.1, testflight 2025.2

chilly dirge
#

I tried the latest testflight version, it's still crashing.

quartz spoke
#

Export your logs and send to me once again please

quartz spoke
#

Can you also record your screen from the home screen until the point it crashes?

quartz spoke
#

Thanks

chilly dirge
#

thank you!

quartz spoke
chilly dirge
#

there isn't a home assistant in my list of analytics data

quartz spoke
#

thats weird.. usually when you have crashes they show up there.. anyway, thanks

chilly dirge
#

maybe it's because I don't have share iPhone & Watch Analytics turned on...

quartz spoke
#

indeed, possibly it

#

oh.. and this prevents the crash to show up for me as well hahaha

#

can you enable it?

chilly dirge
#

I did, and made the app crash again, and still no analytics data for home asssistant. I'm going to do a full reboot and try again a couple times

quartz spoke
#

It may need also to wait some time, Apple usually requires some time to update those things

chilly dirge
#

ok, I'll give it a few tries today.

#

got it! it worked after the reboot

quartz spoke
#

Cool!

chilly dirge
#

working on trying to get you that file, I saw it's JSON contents, and now it's empty... I'll figure it out and get you the file.

#

sent

quartz spoke
#

Thanks, I'll let you know when I have updates, meanwhile something you can try is to disable local push, do you know how to do that?
Companion App Settings >> Your server >> internal URL >> disable local push toggle

(In case it doesnt crash before that 🥲 )

chilly dirge
#

It's not letting me get that far, I even tried in airplane mode which seemed to have worked before for me, but not anymore

quartz spoke
#

No problem, try again later but anyway, I'll get back with more info

chilly dirge
#

ah... airplane mode didn't seem to disable wifi... I got it disabled this time.

#

with local push disabled, it still crashes

quartz spoke
#

Got it, thanks

quartz spoke
#

You are still using the testflight version right? When it crashes you see an option from iOS to report bug, could you do that and write a message so I can find it later on?
Also please note the date and time it happened, thanks.

chilly dirge
#

I am still using test flight. I've seen that message once or twice, but it does not show up every time it crashes.. I usually report it with my email address. I'll make not of the time and date next time it happens.

#

I just tried forcing crashes twice, neither time it popped up that message

quartz spoke
#

There is a new testflight version as well, please give it a try

chilly dirge
#

I've got build 2025.1170 currently. I don't think the new version has propagated to me yet.

chilly dirge
#

The companion app settings still cause a crash on version 2025.1177

Im back from vacations, just a heads up that I didnt forget about your case
