#HA Running on Oracle VM looking to add Zigbee Dongle Plus-E for OpenThread

I currently run Home Assistant out of an Oracle VM on a mini PC dedicated to server-y stuff.

I was dabbling in understanding my Thread network so purchased a dongle (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BG1LJ687?ref_=ppx_hzod_title_dt_b_fed_asin_title_0_0). I've heard you can flash this and have it act as an OpenThread Border router here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6x43lC9TkM.

If I utilize this dongle, do I need to run HA out of the dongle or can I keep my virtual machine?

Is the dongle just acting as a border router or my whole HA server?

Turn your Home Assistant Server into a powerful multiprotocol Hub with the Sonoff ZBDongle-E

what do you mean "run HA out of the dongle" the dongle is just a radio that Home Assistant interfaces with

Awesome, that is what I was originally thinking and then got confused..

#

so no sort of reinstall of HA, just may have to reconnect some zigbee devices?

as long as you're not doing something dumb like trying to run Multiprotocol firmware to run Zigbee and Thread on the same radio that should be it. you're already running HAOS on a VM, you should be able to flash firmware using the Sonoff addon

the 'silicon lab multiprotocol add-on' can't ever seem to find my dongle

The multi-protocol stuff is buggy and broken - if you want Thread and Zigbee then buy two separate radios
