Yes
On the Orange range you'd need to use Docker: https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/linux#install-home-assistant-container
Sorry maybe I wasn’t very clear, the point was whether’I needed a box with fans or if I could just plugin as is, I wondered if Ha made the SBC heat up a lot ?
I mean, that depends on what you do with HA
For a minimal install, not doing anything fancy, you'll be ok. If you're doing anything intensive then an SBC will struggle to cope
Ok ig I should future proof it then ty
Well... if you're not then you can just relocate HA to new hardware - lots of us have done that
Well it’s going to cost me a lil be just to get some heatsink or cases with the fan vs later upgrade and set the sbc for anything else so I just might aswell spend the bucks
@ruby vigil When using Discord's Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Use Shift + click on the Reply option, or click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
You have to change this every time (thank the Discord devs for that).
I'm in the thread, I can see when you reply, there's no need to keep tagging me 😉
Yeah sorry it’s just that am used to answer that way on discord it’s not really a matter of pinging the user for me
If I get a pi 4 for around 50-60 bucks + the heat sink and case for around 20€ there’s no way anything else would beat the price if I don’t get a sbc, even if I buy second hand nuc or usff
Right, so ... you've decided that price now is worth more to you than future proof
It runs fine on opi zero3 whit 2GB ram, 3d printer case + usb hat for extra ports. opi zero3 costs about 30eur whit shipping.
As others sad, one can migrate later.
Fine for you, based on what you're asking it to do 😉
I started on a Pi3, I'm now on a Ryzen - there's no way in hell what I do now would work on an SBC
one problem is finding a fan that is speed controlled and also keeps quiet when running at reduced speed. i can recommend a fan called HighPi Pro 5V. I replaced the fan in a pi 4 kit because it was too noisy.
that said - my HA setup runs on a pi4 4GB with only heatsinks. No fan. No problem so far. It boots from a 120GB SSD connected through a cheap chinese USB3 to sata cable, and that removed a lot of performance bottlenecks compared to a2 class sd card.
this setup has been running since the pi4 came out
By the way how would you rate the importance of add-ons in HA for ur day to day uses ? cuz rn I have seen few add-ons and I think I could live without them because every other services are stored on another of my servers and so it'd allow me to go for other SBC if I wanted cuz I could just go for HA Core or some other version
I have a friend that could 3d print me a case so that's cool
Thanks for the insight, I believe I should do the same as well, as a matter of fact I wondered if I could just make it boot from the network at all
I bought SFF PCs with everything included (ready to go) for less than 50 bucks on eBay 🤔
yeah well here I got a dell optiplex sff for 120€ so idk if I could get that much cheaper
it's a 7050
that's what am currently running for truenas and Kasm
