My current system is a cm4 with eMMC and HAOS installed on the NVMe.

Is it possible to replace it with a CM5008000 “8GB RAM – 0GB Storage (Lite)” and then do an install of HAOS via rpiboot directly on the NVMe?

Yes, but you would have to use rpiboot in mass storage mode.
If the full OS is already on the NVMe and not the eMMC, you wouldn't have to re-install HAOS. That's only needed, if the OS has been installed to the eMMC and the data partition has been moved to the NVMe.

If you used the "move" button, not everything is on the NVMe. Only if you installed everything to it in the first place.

I did moved it to the NVMe.

So it's better to make a full backup and then reinstall HAOS onto the NVMe?

What is the correct way of installing it directly on the NVMe?

Yes, creating a full backup and downloading it would be the way.

#

Easiest way for flashing would be a NVMe to USB adapter and doing it on your PC.
Alternatively you can use rpiboot with a mass storage option.

#

rpiboot -d mass-storage-gadget64

So if I use the NVMe to usb adapter I can skip rpiboot and use Raspberry Pi manager to write the installer on the NVMe.

Yes. If you connect the NVMe to your PC directly (for example with such an adapter), you flash directly and don't need rpiboot.

#

But flash the OS for HA Yellow, not the installer.

That is the guide for rpiboot to the eMMC of the CM5.

#

If you are using a USB to NVMe adapter, you would just select that as flashing target.

And a sidenote: do not use the screws coming with the Yellow to screw down the CM5 to the board. That might damage the CM5.

I know that. I think I'm gonna buy the heatsink for the cm5
https://raspberrypi.dk/en/product/raspberry-pi-compute-module-5-passive-cooler-heatsink/

JKN

An aluminum heatsink designed to fit on a Compute Module 5. Includes thermal pads for maximum heat transfer from the CPU, memory, wireless module (if fitted) and eMMC (if fitted) components to the heatsink itself.

The first one ("Home Assistant OS 14.1 (Yellow)". Not the installer, if it is shown to you.

If you are installing the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 on Yellow, you can keep using the heat sink that is shipped with Home Assistant Yellow.

No. The stock heat sink is not screwed in, but uses push pins in its own holding points. The CM4 screws delivered with the Yellow are independant of the heat sink and must not be used with a CM5.

ahhh, right the screws are independant of the heatsink

been a while since I assembled my yellow with the CM4
