Hi all, is there anywhere I can download the APK for the home assistant companion app? I would like to get it to run on some tablets that are actually too old to connect to Google play services so they can no longer access the play store.

The minimal version without Google services (limited functionality) can be downloaded at F-Droid.

This is the minimal flavor that does not have location tracking or notifications.
The APKs (also the full app with Google services) are available for download on the HA companion app GitHub releases page (some newer pre-release ones might not have APKs included yet)

There wouldn't be a version that can run on Android 4, would there? Otherwise that tablet will finally have to go to scrap after all

The docs say 5.0 or higher. You could try it, but no guarantees.

I did. It doesn't even install it. Guess sun is finally setting on the poor old tablet, unless I can find a custom rom to put on.

I should probably throw out the old trash and just get some cheap tablets somehwere
On Amazon, cheap tablets start at 40 bucks. I really don't know why I even bother...

I totally get that struggle.
My phone is a little bit old and works perfectly fine. It would just need a new battery. But the manifacturer doesn't ship security updates anymore. So...

Yeah, the whole security update thing is what triggered this quest. I won't let them access the internet any more (I lock it in the router) but I had hoped they could still be useful in a more domestic role. Alas, no such luck. It's not a big deal, they have had their lives and deserve their well earned sunset. Also I have others that are just a bit newer. And last but not least. there is always Amazon.
Incidentially, I think it would be great if the HA server had the APK on board and offered it for download, for just these cases.

No, that was never supported (the WebView/browser engine on those versions cannot be updated and is too old for the Home Assistant frontend)
I also don't want to encourage ewaste but Android 5, the current minimum, was released 10 years ago so that tablet is very old and outdated

Actually, it's more ambition on my part than the desire to avoid e-waste, but as someone with a high five-figure bank balance, maybe I should spend my time on more useful projects and treat myself to a few cheap tablets from Amazon.
