#Nanoleaf Integration using Thread Network Issues

Good afternoon,

Having issues with nanoleaf trying to integrate it into home assistant using threads. Ill explain exactly what I have

  • Nanoleaf Elements Hexagon
  • 3+ Nanoleaf A19 Bulbs

I tried to use Nanoleaf hexagons as the border router, but found out that Nanoleaf does not allow 3rd party connection using thread border, and will only internally create a thread border for nanoleaf products only.

I purchased a ZBT-1 and hooked it up to the server. I can see Home Assistant Connect ZBT-1 (OpenThread Border Router) on OTBR integration, but no devices connected.

When I go to the nanoleaf app, I can see I have a thread network called "NanoleafThread56", but no option to use the ZBT.

Am I missing something? Can someone send me documentation on how to connect these without using homekit? Unfortunately iv'e been researching for days and cannot find anything.

@bleak moth I could really use your assistance if you can. I purchased a ZBT-1 from home assistant and I cannot give this working and I don't know why.

bleak moth

alright, so what's you're goal here?

silk mist
#

To add nanoleaf to turn lights on and off

#

I'm sorry for pinging you directly.

bleak moth
#

also, what os is your phone? if you're talking about "homekit" (i assume you actually mean "apple home", ios?)

silk mist
#

I'm using Android, I want to avoid homekit.

#

Every tutorial I've seen uses homekit.

bleak moth
#

homekit has nothing to do with anything; homekit is a separate protocol and i assume you have matter bulbs

silk mist
#

Yes. The a19 matter bulbs

bleak moth
#

unfortunately, i don't have any nanoleaf hardware with border routers, so I don't know exactly how they have that set up.

silk mist
#

😦 ok no worries. I saw you talking about nanoleaf in the chats before so I thought I'd ask

bleak moth
#

what does your network layout look like? any vlans?

#

what sort of router hardware?

silk mist
#

Yes vlans, Asus router

bleak moth
#

so, vlans are gonna be a problem. get rid of that - you need home assistant, your thread border routers, and your phone all on the same network segment.

#

things are a non-starter until you sort that out

#

the thing i'm not certain about is whether you can join the home assistant otbr to the nanoleaf thread network or not - and whether it's a good idea to. Given issues people have been having with that it might be best to ignore the nanoleaf thread border routers and use just home assistant.

#

in which case it's just a matter of ... ignoring them, following the instructions in the HA documents to get the home assistant thread credentials loaded into android, resetting the nanoleaf bulbs, and re-setting them up on the desired thread network.

#

once you have the HA otbr credentials loaded into android, the nanoleaf app will be able to see and use that thread network.

silk mist
#

Can you link me the documentation for getting thread creds into Android?

#

I haven't seen it.

bleak moth
#

it looks like that's partly done already, so jump to step 2

silk mist
#

@bleak moth managed to get nanoleaf to see the correct border router, still can't scan matter bulbs to connect to home assistant.

bleak moth
#

at which point in the flow is it failing?

#

the most common cause for issues is that your phone can't see the thread border router that you're trying to commission to because of network misconfiguration.

#

but if you say exactly which step in the process of adding the device via matter it failed at, that can indicate where the problem is
