#Issue pairing Tradfri light bulbs

I have a fairly new tradfri light and no hub, the instructions just say to pair it directly to the remote (which does work when not connected to HA).

When using a hub, it looks like you are supposed to pair the remote to the hub, then pair the light to the remote by using the pairing button on the remote, however this does… nothing. The light on the remote turns on when I hold the pairing button near the bulb, but nothing actually happens, the bulb stays on, and doesn’t appear in HA.

Am I missing something? Do I need an ikea hub to make this work?

The remote pairs fine, and automations work with it, but the light won’t seem to pair at all, pairing mode doesn’t seem to even exist (other than “hold the remote close and hold the pairing button on the remote for 10 seconds”), but the remote pairs fine by pressing the pairing button rapidly

What are you trying to pair to? HA with a Zigbee stick? The Ikea hub (which one)? Something else?

To pair an IKEA bulb directly to ZHA or Z2M, you have to reset it to put it into pairing mode, by quickly turning the bulb off then on 6 times. I believe it should start flashing or fading in/out while in pairing mode. After you do that, the integration should automatically discover the new bulb while in pairing mode.

I was trying to pair to HA via a zigbee stick

Turning it on and off does nothing

You have to follow the process exactly

Z2M's docs have a copy of the reset steps, but if you do one too many on or off then the reset won't work

iirc the timing for reset on the ikea bulbs isn't that difficult, although if you have bulbs with older firmware it might require more precision. start with the bulb on. then 6 times: turn off, then turn back on. They have a video which shows the expected timing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJm9YpPrGzk

looks like it doesn't actually start blinking, but instead resets to default color/brightness (2700K, 100%)

best is to use an automation to do this, i use a lamp with an wifi sonoff, i have 500ms between toggles and in general works quite well...

it did work eventually

the timing was just SUPER precise

#

and I managed to miss it every other time lmao

and yeah if you do it one too many times it does nothing...
