So what is the home assistant zbt-1 for? Do I need it for ZigBee and home assistant? If so, what else do I need? I am looking at getting some ZigBee devices and I'm confused with all the hubs and sonoff sticks and all that stuff. What do I need?

The devices I'm looking at getting initially are Sonoff thermometer displays

Ah ok, wasn't sure where to go

You need:

  1. One coordinator - often a USB stick but doesn't have to be. Just not a "hub"
  2. Some (Zigbee) router devices - mains powered
  3. End devices to suit

The ZBT-1 is one option for a coordinator, you've got literally dozens of options there though

Would a zbt-1 work HA running in a VM on TrueNAS?

It's a USB stick, as long as you can pass a USB stick through it'll work

Ah so that's the iffy bit then (on TrueNAS you can only pass through the whole controller, not just one usb device)

So goodbye front io 😅

Would it work if it was plugged into another device like a pi

Just use a network connected coordinator
