I have made a Chores setup on HA and I want to set it up that my sons ipad can't have access to any apps or internet until he completes his chores. Is there a way to set that up. I have tp link for router and deco for mesh wifi

Ohohoho a fellow parent looking to manage device usage with their children. HELLO THERE.

#

I haven't done this in HA yet, but have something similar in my ISP's gateway. I'd love to help you figure this out. 🙂

A couple things up front that I suggest:

  • Do not have the default password on your router - depending on the age of your child they will figure it out that it hadn't been changed.
  • Screen Time on the iPad is amazing. It's legitimately the reason why we dipped into the Apple ecosystem, because Android tablets have virtually no parental controls.

NOW....I am going to dig into some HA things to see if I can a) find out what we can set up in there and b) set it all up myself because holy shit do I hate the way it works in my ISP's gateway.

some ideas:

if you used an opnsense router and the HACS (not core) integration. firewall rules get exposed as a switch

use a seperate AP for their devices and switch it on/off by whatever means you fancy.

this doesnt stop offline apps working mind.

can you set the ipad as a business device which gives ability to remote disable/enable/wipe devices etc.. I assume they have that sort of thing (i dont use them)

theres also the pysically locking them away with a remotely controlled lock on the box/safe too. (add a charger as a bonus that its charged up once chores are complete)

lol I can't add my TP-Link AP via the Omada integration - get an "unexpected error". Guess I get to figure that out first...

-# I won't clog here up with any of that.

Is your tp link an Omada, too?

what is omada anyway?

It’s another brand under TP Link. I think I need to reach out to the integration owner because I cannot get the damn thing to connect to my EAP.

NICE I see that you have a ton of items linked to it. This is what you will want to use to control things. You should be able to see the MAC addresses of your devices and use that to control access.

#

Trying to connect it to a to do list is the part that is a little tricky for me… but I’m sure it can be done.

I'm chiming in on something a little ancillary, but I'm curious how you have your chores setup in HA. I've been trying to look for examples. Any chance you don't mind sharing how you have it set up?
